The Labradoodle originates in Australia. In 1989 the GDAV Guide Dog Services in Australia bred the first intentional litter of Labradoodles, by breeding a Labrador to a Poodle, for a woman in need of an allergy friendly guide dog. These first Labrador and Poodle breedings produced an occasional allergy friendly puppy. Reputable breeders in Australia began breeding carefully selected Labradoodles to other Labradoodles. Occasionally, other breeds were brought into certain Labradoodle lines. The end result is the spectacular multigeneration Australian Labradoodle that we know today!
Many breeders still produce the lower generation Labradoodles. These dogs can make wonderful pets but they do not produce consistently allergy friendly coats. These earlier generations of Labradoodles can make wonderful family companions for people without allergies.
Breeders from around the world have imported Australian Labradoodles from Australia for their breeding programs. Multi-generation Australian Labradoodles offer predictability in terms of coat, size, and temperament.
We do not want to see the same genetic problems that many purebred dog breeds have been plagued with. We use ONLY health tested dogs with excellent temperaments in our breeding program.
First Generation Labradoodle (sometimes referred to as F1): A Lab bred to a Poodle
Second Generation Labradoodle (sometimes referred to as F1B): A first generation Labradoodle bred to a Poodle
Australian Labradoodle (sometimes referred to as a multigen): Many generations of Australian Labradoodles bred to Australian Labradoodles.
Australian Labradoodles come in three (approximate) sizes:
Standard: 21-24 inches tall and approximately 50-65 pounds
Medium: 17-20 inches tall and approximately 30-40 pounds
Miniature: 14-16 inches tall and approximately 16-25 pounds
Fleece: wavy to loose spirals with a soft, silky texture. Should be non-shedding.
Wool: thicker 'wool' textured coat. Curly rather than wavy. Totally non-shedding.
Hair: similar to a lab or a terrier. Always shedding.
